In this WP pieceMcCain is quoted as saying:

Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, a decorated Vietnam veteran who campaigns with Bush but has worked closely with Kerry in the Senate, has called for a cease fire.

"I wish we would stop opening wounds from a war of more than 30 years ago and talk about the war we're fighting now," McCain told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "I believe they both served honorably."

Do they want to make this issue go away? Heh!

Aftenposten Norway, Norwegian news in English: "The state-run Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) had said the strike, once widened to 455,000 bpd with the closure of Ringhorne, would mean a daily loss of income of about NOK 110 million (USD 15.96 million), at USD 35 a barrel. About 80 percent of income goes to the state, it said."

News from Norway: a lefty group called "tellhim.no" have made this ad (pdf file, 407 kb), supposed to run in The Washington Post, if they can raise the money.

What kind of effect (if any) will such a campaign have on US (electoral) politics? I dunno. I just hope it won't help Bush.

Sudan Government, Rebels Sign Peace Pact

After many hours of delay and pressure from outside parties, the final peace agreement, (hopefully) ending the civil war was signed an hour or so ago.

Unless unexpected events come up over the night, a signing of a final protocols ending the civil war in Sudan will happen tomorrow, in Kenya. BBC has it.

The actual treaty will take a couple of weeks to hammer out, and may be signed elsewhere, maybe somewhere very, very visible.

Is Kerry channelling Jed Bartlet on antiabortion judges?

According to Ron Fournier, of the Associated Press, Kerry could back an antiabortion judge, under specific circumstances. People are crying "foul", for some reason, but the only thing I see happening, is that Kerry would view a replacement for Scalia differently than a replacement for Souter.

This reminds me of What would Jed Bartlet do? As we all know, Jed Bartlet would replace a liberal and a conservative with a new pair of a liberal and a conservative.

It seemed excellent on TV, in one of the best episodes of The West Wing this season: "The Supremes". Would real life be like that....

My favourite politician, Norwegian Development Minister Hilde Frafjord-Johnson urges rich countries on child education aid, according to the BBC:

"We have a choice. We can if we set our priorities right offer every child on earth access to basic education, irrespective of where she lives and how poor she is," Ms Johnson said.

"It's up to us and we just have to deliver on our promises and not let her and her friends down.".

That's why I am in politics.
